How Do I Remove My Guardian or End My Guardianship?

After receiving your letter or motion, the Probate Court will schedule a hearing. You can have an attorney represent you at the hearing. If you do not have an attorney, you can ask the court for one to be appointed to you.

The hearing is your chance to tell the judge your story.

  • Your guardian will try to show that there is still a reason for them to remain your guardian.
  • You (and your lawyer) should be ready to explain to the judge how you can make decisions and take care of yourself.
  • The judge will consider the arguments and make a decision. They may:
    • End your guardianship
    • Change the terms of your guardianship
    • Replace your guardian with a different person
