Canes

Consult your healthcare provider to determine the right mobility device for your needs.

Canes

A cane is a mobility aid that can help you maintain balance and stability while walking. It can also assist with weight-bearing and ensure safety as you move. Canes may provide short-term support if you are recovering from an injury or surgical procedure, or may be used long-term if you have mobility concerns due to aging or disability. The best cane for you is one that promotes safety, independence, function, and mobility. There are several types of canes available to suit different needs, including:

  • Single-point cane: This type of cane may also be known as a “standard” or “straight” cane”. It has a single tip at the bottom, so it provides only one point of contact with the ground, and is appropriate if you require light to moderate support for balance and stability while walking. Single-point canes may also be fashioned with a quad-tip, allowing the cane to stand freely.
  • Quad cane: This cane provides more support compared to a single-point cane because it has four “feet” on the bottom instead of just one. These 4 points of contact provide a wider base and it is recommended if you require increased support for balance and stability.
  • Folding cane: This type of cane is very similar to a single-point or standard cane, however it is more light-weight and is able to fold down to a compact size for storage or travel.
  • Seat cane: This is a unique type of cane that functions as a single-point cane to assist with walking and also as a portable chair, allowing the user to rest when needed.

How can I get a cane?

You can buy or rent new and used canes from various sources, depending on your needs and preferences:

  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Providers: Many local DME providers sell or rent canes. Visiting a provider in person allows you to try out different models and get professional advice.
  • Online Retailers: Canes are available for purchase from online retailers, offering a wide range of options and prices. Be sure to research reputable sellers and check reviews before purchasing.
  • Local Organizations or Nonprofits: Most drugstores sell canes while some community organizations or nonprofits lend or rent them, especially for short-term use.
  • Healthcare Facilities: Some clinics, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers may provide canes for short-term use during recovery.

Each option has its benefits, so consider your budget, intended use, and whether you need long-term or short-term access.

Insurance: Canes may be covered by some insurance plans, but the specific requirements and coverage amounts depend on your insurance provider and plan. For example, you might need prior authorization, a letter of medical necessity, or a doctor’s prescription. Check your insurance plan’s details for information on coverage for durable medical equipment (DME). Your doctor, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or DME provider can also help guide you through the process of getting insurance coverage for your cane.

Consulting with a healthcare provider, such as a primary care provider (PCP), physical therapist, or occupational therapist, is essential to determine the right mobility device for your needs. They can assess your situation, recommend the most suitable device, and provide training on how to use it safely and effectively.
