Wheelchairs

Consult your healthcare provider to determine the right mobility device for your needs.

Wheelchairs

If you have a mobility impairment, a wheelchair can help you navigate your environment and participate in daily activities. The best wheelchair for you is the one that provides comfort, independence, and meets your specific mobility needs. There are various types of wheelchairs, and they can be customized to suit your individual requirements. Some types of wheelchairs and customizable options include:

  • Manual chair vs. power chair (portability, independence, level of function, etc)
  • Frame and seat (different levels of support and comfort, lightweight vs sturdy, adjustable, etc)
  • Wheels/tires (different tire types and sizes depending on terrain and maneuverability needs)
  • Accessories (armrests, footrests, backrests, headrests, anti-tip bars, breaks, chest/trunk support, etc…

How can I get a wheelchair?

  • A wheelchair assessment or evaluation is necessary to determine the best chair to meet your individual needs. These assessments require a referral from your doctor and are typically conducted by a qualified physical therapist (PT) or occupational therapist (OT). During the assessment, various factors are considered, including your mobility status, postural support, overall health, safety, and ability to perform daily tasks, as well as your personal expectations and goals for using the wheelchair. These factors help determine the best wheelchair type, frame design, seating, supports, and other customizations that will enhance your mobility and functionality in daily life.
  • Insurance: Wheelchairs are usually covered by insurance plans, but the specific requirements and coverage amounts depend on your insurance provider and plan. For example, you might need prior authorization, a letter of medical necessity, or a doctor’s prescription. Check your insurance plan’s details for information on coverage for durable medical equipment (DME). Your doctor, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or DME provider can also help guide you through the process of getting insurance coverage for your wheelchair.

Consulting with a healthcare provider, such as a primary care provider (PCP), physical therapist, or occupational therapist, is essential to determine the right mobility device for your needs. They can assess your situation, recommend the most suitable device, and provide training on how to use it safely and effectively.
