How Can I Get Reading Devices?

Vision rehabilitation programs, eye doctors, and orientation and mobility specialists can help you get a device that is right for your needs. You can buy or rent new and used devices from various sources, depending on your needs and preferences:

  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Providers and Public Libraries: Many local DME providers sell or rent devices for free or at a low cost to people who are blind or visually impaired. Libraries often offer large print and audio versions of books and may even have magnification options available.
  • Online Retailers: Some devices are available for purchase from online stores and specialty retailers. Be sure to research reputable sellers and check reviews before purchasing.

Each option has its benefits, so consider your budget, intended use, and whether you need long-term or short-term access.

Insurance Coverage: Reading devices are generally not covered by most health insurance plans.. However, some state programs, nonprofit organizations, and vocational rehabilitation services may provide them for free or at a low cost. Check your plan details, and ask your doctor, therapist, or DME provider for help with the process.
