Home Modifications

Consult your healthcare provider to determine the right assistive technology for your needs.

Home Modifications

Home modifications are changes made to your home to make it safer and more accessible. These modifications can help if you have a disability that makes it difficult to move around safely and independently. Common home modifications include:

  • Entryway ramps
  • Stairway lifts
  • Widened doorways and hallways
  • Curbless shower or walk-in tub
  • First floor room access (bathroom, bedroom, laundry room, etc)
  • Adjusted height of counters, sinks, cabinets, appliances, etc.
  • Grab bars and non-slip flooring
  • Replace door knobs with handles

How Can I Get My Home Modified?

You can get your home modified by following these steps:

  1. Assess Your Needs – Identify the specific challenges you face at home and determine what modifications would improve accessibility and safety.
  2. Consult Professionals – Work with an occupational therapist, home modification specialist, or contractor experienced in accessibility to evaluate your home and recommend changes.
  3. Explore Funding Options – Check if you qualify for financial assistance through programs like Medicaid waivers, Veterans Affairs benefits, non-profit organizations, or local/state assistance programs.
  4. Apply for Grants or Loans – Some government agencies and organizations offer grants or low-interest loans to help cover the cost of home modifications.
  5. Hire a Qualified Contractor – Choose a licensed contractor with experience in adaptive home modifications to ensure the work meets safety and accessibility standards.
  6. Complete the Modifications – Once approved and funded, have the necessary modifications made to improve your home’s accessibility and your independence.
