Diane, who has orthopedic impairments which limit her mobility, was unable to carry her laundry from her third-floor apartment to the laundry room in the basement of her building without severe back pain. Although her landlord said it was fine, the apartment’s housing association told Diane that she could not install a washer or dryer in her own apartment. Her pain continued to get worse, and Diane called us for assistance.
Our attorney provided Diane with a template letter for her doctor so that she could formally request an accommodation from the housing association. We also sent a demand letter and spoke with the property manager about their obligations to provide accommodations to residents with disabilities. Although it took some effort, Diane’s request was finally granted. Diane now has her own washer and dryer and no longer has to carry heavy loads up and down three flights of stairs.
