Disability Rights Center – New Hampshire (DRC-NH) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the National Disability Rights Network’s 2020 Advocacy Award in recognition of Disability Unscripted: 2020 Candidates on Inclusion & Accessibility. In Disability Unscripted, DRC-NH staff spoke with twenty-two presidential primary candidates on issues relating to disability, campaign inclusion, and accessibility so that viewers could watch candidates’ candid, unscripted responses to these critical issues.
“With one in five Americans, including nineteen percent of likely voters, experiencing a disability, this is a demographic that candidates cannot afford to ignore,” said Stephanie Patrick, Executive Director of DRC-NH. “Living in New Hampshire we have unique access to the primary candidates. We used this opportunity to integrate disability rights issues into the national narrative and to educate individuals with disabilities, their families, friends, and allies about the candidates so that they can make informed choices on Election Day.”
Many candidates offered specific disability related policy proposals as part of their campaign platforms and disability was even discussed on the debate stage. “We are gratified that the voices of people with disabilities have gotten more attention during this primary season than ever before. It seems like presidential candidates are finally beginning to understand how important the disability vote is and that our voices need to be heard,” said Patrick.
