Your Rights

The following is a summary of your legal rights and protections. Exceptions apply – Ask Us.*

  • You have the RIGHT to be treated with dignity and respect, free from abuse, neglect, coercion, and exploitation (personal or financial).
  • You have the RIGHT to be from discrimination.
  • You have the RIGHT to an accessible, safe, sanitary, and humane living environment.
  • You have the RIGHT to be free from restraint and seclusion.
  • You have the RIGHT to privacy and confidentiality.
  • You have the RIGHT to send and receive mail and email, make phone calls, have visitors, and receive personal care in a private setting.
  • You have the RIGHT to keep and use your own money and personal belongings.
  • You have the RIGHT to prompt medical, dental, and mental health services provided in the least restrictive environment.
  • You have the RIGHT to help create your care plan, give consent to or refuse treatment.
  • You have the RIGHT to have family or friends assist you with your care plan and decision-making.
  • You have the RIGHT to make a complaint or file a grievance without fear of punishment or retribution.

Disability Rights Center – New Hampshire is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating barriers for people with disabilities across New Hampshire. DRC is the federally designated protection and advocacy agency for New Hampshire and has authority under federal law to conduct investigations in cases of probable abuse or neglect.
