Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Devices

Consult your healthcare provider to determine the right assistive technology for your needs.

What Are AAC Devices?

AAC devices help if you have difficulty communicating through speech. They can replace or support your natural speech, and can be used in combination with other methods of communication, increasing your independence and ability to participate in daily life. You can use an AAC device temporarily or on a more permanent basis. There are several different types of AAC devices, depending on your specific needs.

AAC devices range from simple, low-tech tools to advanced, high-tech devices.  Some devices include:

  • Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS)
  • Eye pointing frames
  • Switches or preprogrammed buttons
  • Computer-based systems
  • Tablets or laptops (dedicated devices or downloaded applications)

How Can I Get An AAC Device?

  • A speech-language pathologist (SLP) can work with you to determine the right AAC device for your needs.

Insurance: Your health insurance may cover some or all of the cost of an AAC device. Some insurance plans require a doctor’s prescription or a letter explaining why the device is needed. Check your insurance plan for details.

  • If you can’t afford an AAC device, talk to your speech therapist or doctor about other financial assistance options.
  • If your child needs an AAC device for school, the school may have to provide one. Learn more about the rights of students with disabilities at https://drcnh.org/disability-issue-areas/education/.
