From isolation to inclusion – a determined student’s educational journey is transformed after reaching out to us for assistance.
When Sophia was in fourth grade, she took a medication that caused her to have emotional and behavioral outbursts. After two months, she stopped taking it, and the problems went away. Instead of helping her through this temporary medical issue, her local school district first put her in remote learning and then moved her into an out-of-district placement in another state.
For over a year, even though Sophia stayed active with her local animal shelter, Girl Scouts, and Sunday School, her school district wouldn’t let her return to regular classes. During this time, she was cut off from her school friends and couldn’t join any school activities or field trips. Sophia started fifth grade commuting almost an hour each way to her out-of-district placement, despite her improved behavior and her guardian’s repeated requests for her to return to her local school.
With our assistance and advocacy, Sophia was able to finish out her fifth-grade year back at her public school. Our attorney worked to ensure Sophia had the right supports and services in place, to succeed in school and reach her full potential.
